DermaRite significantly expands recall of contaminated healthcare products

The expanded recall now includes 16 products total, including hand sanitizers, antiseptic soaps, skin creams and deodorant.

DermaRite Industries has significantly expanded a voluntary recall of hand soaps, skin creams and other personal hygiene products, adding 12 more products to a growing list of contaminated healthcare items that could pose serious health risks.

The company first recalled four products after discovering contamination with Burkholderia cepacia complex, a dangerous bacteria. The expanded recall now includes 16 products total — ranging from hand sanitizers and antiseptic soaps to skin creams and even deodorant.

The recalled products were distributed nationwide and in Puerto Rico.

The bacteria contamination is especially dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, who could develop life-threatening blood infections or sepsis. Even healthy people with minor cuts or skin irritations could develop localized infections.

Products now included in the recall

  • DermaKleen — Antiseptic lotion soap with Vitamin E for handwashing
  • DermaMed — Skin protectant for drying oozing from poison ivy, oak, sumac or other skin irritations
  • DermaSarra — External pain relief cream for itching from minor skin irritations, dry skin, insect bites or sunburn

The company says it has not received reports of illness related to the contaminated products. However, consumers who have any of these items should stop using them immediately and throw them away.

People who may have been exposed should watch for signs of infection and contact their doctor if they develop symptoms. Those with compromised immune systems should be especially vigilant.

Consumers with questions can call the company’s recall hotline at 888-943-5190, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, or email [email protected].
